Contemporary design is often misunderstood. It’s not the same as the modern design style, even though the dictionary notes the two terms as synonyms. In reality contemporary design is always changing, and mainly involves the trends of here and now with a few identifying characteristics. Contemporary spaces are always clean and simple, subtly sophisticated and minimalist with an open and airy feel.
“Contemporary style embraces minimalistic elements highlighting grays, beiges, and shades of white. Sleek, thoughtful, hidden details emphasize an edited aesthetic. Contemporary style offers an ‘everything in its place’ interior featuring designs that are high on function and simplicity and low on collections and fuss”
-Designer Kerrie Kelly

ORIGINS
Contemporary design became popular in the 1970’s, and was quite a unique trend after the mid century modern era. By definition, the contemporary style refers to “living or occurring at present”. It isn’t tied to any particular timeframe, but rather sits within the current moment. It was first seen as a combination of styles such as modern, post modern and art deco, but slowly became its a style all it’s own. Some designers still describe it as a combination of styles that are on trend at the time.
COLORS & TEXTURES
When it comes to color in contemporary spaces, contrast is important. Mix white and cream with darker colors such as black and gray. Palettes are often made up of predominantly neutrals with pops of bold color used purposefully rather than randomly. Perhaps in a piece of art, a rug or pillow. Color is not scattered all over the room; it’s minimal and deliberate.
Here is an example of a contemporary color palette:

Textures vary greatly but are often soft and layered. Things like metal, glass and polished stone such as marble are used frequently. Use natural fabrics like wool, cotton, linen, jute and silk.

FURNITURE & DECOR
Contemporary furniture is much different now than it was at the time of it’s origin. It often utilizes clean, sleek lines that are either straight or curved. Absolutely nothing in contemporary spaces is ornate or heavy looking. It should make a statement without being complex or cluttered.
Natural light is often a big factor, as windows typically have little to no blinds or drapes on them. Decor is basic and bold and well as minimalistic; prioritize structure and function over ornament. There is no room for clutter - everything has it’s place.
KITCHEN & BATHROOM
Contemporary kitchens and bathrooms follow the same up-to-date, sleek and clean guidelines the rest of the style does. This style can be interpreted in a number of ways in both kitchens and bathrooms. Here are some photos to help you visualize the style and maybe give you some inspiration for your own space!
Contemporary design is incredibly versatile - you could go into 10 different rooms and they’d all be different. You can’t say that about all styles. And because it is always changing with the times, it’s easy to bring in elements from specific trends and other styles while keeping the overall look contemporary design is known for. Keep things light, clean and neutral and you’re sure to create a beautiful contemporary space!
