Traditional design is firmly rooted in history and feels warm, classic and refined. It’s timeless, unapologetically symmetrical and embraces the traditions of the past. Spaces are well put together but make a point not to cross the line into uninviting or overly fancy. Some people avoid the style for fear of making their home look like their grandma’s, but when done right traditional design is a beautiful style that will always have its place no matter the times.
ORIGINS
Traditional design originated in Europe during the 18th and 19th century, mainly in countries like France and England where people were inspired by the art and culture of antiquity. It made its way to America and became more widespread during the first half of the 20th century as postwar suburbanites aimed to emulate the look of the style’s European roots. Traditional design takes cues from the Neoclassical and Georgian periods, as well as the Colonial style.
COLOR & TEXTURE
Traditional colors are typically neutral, subtle, warm and earthy rather than light or bright. Muted, saturated jewel tones of blue, red and yellow are mixed with cream, beige and brown. Spaces are not overwhelmed with color, and tend to lean neutral with more color brought in through furniture and accents.
Here is an example of a traditional color palette:

Materials like cotton, wool, velvet, fur and silk are widely used within the Traditional style. Patterns are also subtle in traditional motifs such as damask, floral or stripes.
FURNITURE & DECOR
Furniture is often made of darker woods such as walnut and mahogany, and is sometimes heavy and ornate although people are getting away from that in more recent times. Window treatments are layered and classic looking, sometimes with patterned drapes and tassel tie backs.
As mentioned above, symmetry is key in traditional spaces. This can be accomplished with a pair of matching chairs, side tables or lamps among other items. Sprinkle in antiques as you see fit, depending on how deep you want to go into the design style. Things like classic art, china sets, antique silver and tablecloths can be great touches. Architectural details such as crown moulding and wainscoting as well as wallpaper in traditional motifs are also popular.
KITCHEN & BATH
Traditional kitchens and bathrooms can take many forms while staying within the guidelines of the style. A few identifying characteristics for cabinets are raised panel doors, either painted or stained and sometimes with glass inserts. This allows you to showcase any items you don't want hidden behind the door. Countertops are usually rich and luxurious looking, and colors are muted and classic.
Here are some examples of traditional kitchens and bathrooms to help you visualize the style in these applications.
The traditional style is firmly rooted in history, and likely will be for generations to come. While some people prefer to take this style to a more modern place, many feel it is perfect just the way it is. You can sprinkle traditional pieces into some design styles, including transitional and farmhouse and they will fit right in. Stick to classic, timeless pieces and focus on symmetry and you will create a traditional space you’re sure to love!
